This is a very simple meditation. Find a place where you can connect with nature or a somewhere at home where you won’t be disturbed . Breathe in peace and tranquillity and breathe out any stress or tension. Ask for the highest good and the highest knowledge to come to you. Visualise your heart like a flower bud, opening petal by petal to the truth and eternal knowledge in your soul. Visualise a doorway where your heart is and when you enter through it, find yourself in a sacred space. It might be in a garden or by the sea. Look around and you’ll see a bench that you should go and sit on. Allow yourself to ask the universe to bring your guide to you to give you a message today. Have no expectations and don’t think about the kind of guide that will show up. Focus on the sounds of nature around you, the sound of the waves or birds. Wait in tranquillity until your guide approaches.
The first time you do this, you may just get a symbol or a short message. Or you could get a full on conversation. Be open to what comes. When you’ve finished, send love to your guide and thanks. Know that they are a symbol of your soul. They have come to you from your unconscious, the universe, from all that is to bring to you a positive message to enhance your life. That knowledge is a part of your being. When you’ve finished, thank your guide, keep breathing in the peace and tranquillity and then allow your heart to reform itself into a bud of truth and purity, exiting the door of your heart and find yourself back in your original space.
This is a technique you can do on a regular basis. I find it very helpful in my life. It’s incredible what symbols and messages come up. Keep a journal and know that your guide and higher wisdom are always with you.

Another Ted Talk in which Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard reveals the habits of happiness. We don’t often think about happiness – or any other emotion – as being formed by habit. But what if it is? What if we could change the way that we feel just by changing what we usually do? Brain scans show that meditation changes our brains and that changes our feelings. Meditation is just a habit anyone can adopt. A habit is just something you do repeatedly. Think about anything you do again and again, whether it’s going for a daily walk or always having a sandwich for lunch, and ask yourself how it makes you feel. Look at the thoughts you think repeatedly. It’s all about knowing what makes you feel good and doing more of it and releasing anything that doesn’t work for you.

Are you a meme machine?

A meme is just an idea that we pass around. Or, as philosopher Daniel Dennet says in this Ted Talk, an information packet with attitude. Thoughts spread like viruses and literally infect our minds. Maybe as a kid you passed around the idea that was rife in playgrounds when I was young that if you swallowed an apple seed, a tree would grow in your tummy. You know better now. But the likelihood is that you are, right now, acting as a host for ideas that are just as untrue but that people treat as hard facts about the world. Ideas about who you are or what’s possible. Toltec wisdom from ancient mystics tells us to stalk our thoughts and root out those that don’t belong. I am a huge believer in the need to send our thoughts to rehab on a regular basis. The next time you are convinced that you can’t do something, stop and ask yourself; is this true, or is this an idea that someone else has given me and that I’m now living out and passing on? Throughout history, people have pushed the boundaries of possibility by chucking out limiting memes and striking out to discover what lies beyond. Sometimes, when you are dealing with what’s possible, it’s best to find out for yourself.

Is your future set in stone?

I have always thought that although we might be fated to have some experiences, ultimately our destiny is not set in stone. Along with that, I think that we have tremendous power to change our future. Recent discoveries in fields such as quantum physics give us the scientific seal of approval on ideas that you have more than one potential future in front of you. Here, professor of philosophy Daniel Dennet gives a fairly weighty but well worth watching lecture on free will, determinism (or the idea that we can’t escape our past) and evolution. The talk starts at around 13.50 so you can skip forward past the introductions.
